2020 Class of African Young Leaders

Who Are African Young Leaders?

African Young Leaders are an elite group of Africa’s highest potential young adults aged 15 – 20 with unique talents who are creating a conducive ecosystem to build the next generation of accountable governance and nurture sustainable economies. They represent a wide range of sectors and are a sought-after peer network, driving each other to do more and be more.

From being challenged at leading universities to engaging with innovative peers and influencers, AYLs are transforming how we define leadership and inspire impact as teenagers in Africa. AYLFs believe in an Africa where teenagers are critical to solution building, policy-making and lasting change in their communities.

In each country, AYLs self-organize to create projects that address the needs of their community. Projects are wide-ranging – from responding to disasters and combating poverty, to fighting climate change and building inclusive communities. AYL are diverse in expertise, education, income and race, but are united by their desire to bring about change.

We are a community, acting as a launch pad for activities and initiatives that help reshape the state of Africa.

What do #AYLF do?

Building A Nation

The African Young Leaders are on a mission to build a bright and prosperous future today, rather than wait for that future to come to us.

  • Tipping Point - With the largest youth population in history, there is an unprecedented opportunity for young people to take an active role in shaping the future. This generation has inherited enormous global challenges, but has the ability to confront the status quo and offer youth-led solutions for change.
  • In each city, teams of AYLF self-organize to create projects that address the needs of their community. Projects are wide-ranging – from responding to disasters and combating poverty, to fighting climate change and building inclusive communities. AYLFs are diverse in expertise, education and income, but are united by their desire to bring about change.
  • Members of the network meet each year at the Teen General Assembly of the Teennation, and virtually, several times a year. They also develop recommendations and integrate their findings into Teennation activities and regional and industry events, as well as global decision-making processes.
  • To be able to thrive in the world of constant change we now live in, young people need opportunities to dream, lead, and initiate change in and out of school, applying it across all aspects of their lives.

Never has there been such weighty responsibility on the shoulders of young people. Never has there been the influence in the hands of young people like the influence they carry now. But for Africa to reap the dividends she has longed for, it is up to our generation to make sure that influence is channelled correctly and directed towards relevant issues that affect not only ourselves but generations after us. This can only be achieved if we come together as young people and begin to address the challenges before us as a continent.
